As the third largest city in the U.S., Chicago has thriving manufacturing, retail and trade sectors, and a world-renowned history and cultural identity. But Chicago struggles with the deep effects of economic dislocation, racial tensions and inner-city crime and gang violence.

Our Chicago partner organization, Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC Chicago) is at the center of efforts to address these myriad issues. LISC Chicago “organizes capital and other resources to support initiatives that will stimulate the comprehensive development of healthy, stable neighborhoods and foster their connection to the socioeconomic mainstream of the metropolitan region.”1 UW students may choose to work in one of many programs LISC coordinates, including those dealing with affordable housing, economic development, capacity building (including leadership development and technology initiatives) and the Great Neighborhoods program.

UW-Madison students can pursue an internships at LISC or explore many other opportunities in Chicago at sites including:
