His teaching and research interests are in African politics, cultural pluralism, comparative politics and the state. Among his many books and articles are The Politics of Cultural Pluralism, The Rise and Decline of the Zairian State (with Thomas Turner), Ideology and Development in Africa, and The African Colonial State in Comparative Perspective.
